Our Lady is a small girl on her knees, her hands folded over a cushion of unfinished needlework, and her eyes go up. Lilies and roses stand in a vase at her side; a clay cup, a basket of white linen, a closed book on a stool. The Metropolitan Museum tells the medieval legend that Mary lived as a child in the Temple, praying and sewing vestments, and that such paintings were models for girls. Her large, upturned eyes, the Met says, meet heaven's blessing through ethereal angels. It credits the work's force to Zurbarán the still-life painter, to his calculated use of the empty spaces between simple objects, and to pottery and textiles from the Seville of his day that join the divine and the everyday. The Church keeps her Presentation on 21 November. The work waits in her lap while she prays.
