Christ lifts a crown onto His Mother's head, and she crosses her hands at her breast and bows to take it. The Holy Spirit, a white dove, opens His wings in the gold above them. The Getty says Gentile da Fabriano painted this as the front of a two-sided processional standard, carried in his native Fabriano, probably by devotees of the Virgin on her feast days. The Fondazione Magnani-Rocca near Parma holds the other face, Saint Francis receiving the stigmata. Sometime before 1834, the Getty writes, it was likely cut in half so both sides could hang on a gallery wall. A banner made to be carried now stands still.
