Christ lifts a piece of bread and looks out of the supper at us, His other hand resting on a whole loaf, a glass carafe of red wine on the cloth before Him. The Confraternity of Corpus Domini in Urbino, the brotherhood of the Body of the Lord, commissioned this from Titian as one face of a processional banner; he painted it in Venice between 1542 and 1544, and the confraternity's payment records show it reached Urbino in June 1544. A year later the painter Pietro Viti parted the two faces so that they could hang either side of the high altar of Santa Maria di Pian di Mercato; the other face is the Resurrection. The Galleria Nazionale delle Marche notes the table set on a slant to carry its still life and, through the arches, a domed round building and a pyramid very like the Pyramid of Cestius in Rome. Below, a small dog noses the floor. The bread He raises is the Body the brotherhood was named for, and His eyes are on us, who come to receive it.
