About this painting

Out of thirty-nine scenes, the chapel's own custodians name two for their feeling — the tenderness of a kiss at the Golden Gate, and this: the despair of the weeping mothers. Herod gives the order from a balcony at the upper left and the soldiers carry it out below him, and Giotto puts the whole weight of the picture on the women. Matthew ends the passage by quoting Jeremiah: Rachel refusing to be comforted.

Then Herod perceiving that he was deluded by the wise men, was exceeding angry: and sending killed all the menchildren that were in Bethlehem, and in all the borders thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.
