Christ kneels on the floor at a disciple's bare foot, and the basin waits beside Him. On the left an old man loosens his sandal; another disciple stands holding a jug; a pair of sandals already lies on the floor. The Lord of the room is the one kneeling lowest. Peter would refuse, then give in. When the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro worked on these walls in 2001 and 2002, it reported that Giotto used true fresco together with tempera, lime secco, Roman stucco and oil on one surface, the oldest known case. Every method he had went to Our Lord kneeling at another man's feet.
After that, he putteth water into a basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
