The restorers found that Giotto was not only frescoing. The Istituto Centrale per il Restauro's campaign of 2001 and 2002 reported that these walls are the oldest known case of true fresco used together with tempera, lime secco, Roman stucco and oil on one surface. He was using every method available to get what he wanted. What he wanted here was a man kneeling at another man's feet with a towel, and Peter refusing, then giving in.
After that, he putteth water into a basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
