Giotto paints Mary's funeral as a rite performed correctly. Her falling asleep, burial and assumption come down in the Church's tradition, set down in the Transitus writings, and Berlin reads the panel as those events fused into one ceremony of remembrance.
Peter recites from the psalms. Andrew, in green, carries the aspergillum. An angel blows into a censer, and pairs of angels hold twisted candles lit for the blessing of the dying. It stood over an Ognissanti altar kept for offices of the dead, and Berlin reads it as matched to the rite performed in front of it.
