Christ's right hand is still at the crown on Our Lady's head, and in His other hand an open book. Kayoko Ichikawa, writing in IKON, holds that the crowning gesture belongs to the original design, and describes the Virgin in the orant pose, palms turned outward. Gold lines run through the folds of her dark mantle; Ichikawa reads that chrysography, an eastern technique, as honouring her as Maria Regina. The Courtauld says Guido da Siena's long, low work was once the top of an altarpiece, and that the coronation was thought especially fitting for works shown higher up. Our Lady is crowned up there, and we look up.
