An angel in red and gold holds out a small round fruit, and the Christ Child reaches from His Mother's lap. The National Gallery of Art reads the fruit as the apple of Original Sin, and the reach as His acceptance of the Cross to come. It names the robe a dalmatic, the deacon's vestment at solemn High Mass, so the angel who offers it is dressed for the altar. Our Lady keeps her eyes on her book. The gallery reads the carved vine round the arch as the Eucharistic wine, and on the columns Hans Memling sets David with his harp and Isaiah, who foretold the Virgin Birth.
