About this painting

God the Father wears a pope's crown. The Cleveland Museum of Art reads the purple tiara as deliberate: made in Antwerp, the center of religious learning in Catholic Flanders, it emphasizes the pope's role as God's true representative on earth.

The Father holds the dead Christ while the dove of the Holy Spirit hovers above, and angels circle all three carrying the instruments of the Passion.

Look at the clasp of his elaborate cape. A small Saint Barbara stands there, which the museum takes as a clue that the panel belonged in a chapel dedicated to her.
