A penguin stands at the water's edge beside two swans, and neither has any business in the other's country. The Toledo Museum of Art names them: a South American Humboldt penguin, European mute swans, in a garden that let Izaac van Oosten set side by side creatures that never meet. The museum counts more than a hundred birds and animals, nearly all recognisable species, drawn from what the Netherlands had to hand in menageries, book illustrations and stuffed specimens. Adam and Eve are in here somewhere, small among the trees; the museum asks you to look for them. Every creature stands exact to its kind, already named.
