
The angel driving Adam and Eve out of the garden is naked, and the Met reads that nakedness as pity — a human body given to the one figure whose job is to enforce the sentence. Above, God the Father is borne by seraphim over a mappamondo: earth at the centre, then the four elements, the planets, the zodiac. Eden's four rivers rise from the ground at the lower right. This was the bottom edge of an altarpiece in San Domenico, Siena, in 1445.
