The sun and the moon stand in one sky, and a cloud half hides them both, as if neither could look. The Prado reads this as the hour after Christ's death, when the procession has left Golgotha and only His anguished relatives and disciples remain. Our Lady sits on a stone, in tears and close to fainting, as the museum sees her; two Marys weep beside her, and Saint John stands alone. Juan de Flandes keeps a soldier in armour on the right. A skull, Adam's by legend, lies at the foot of the Cross, and far off at left rises the Alhambra, seen from the Generalife.
