The fingers of Christ are spread and bent like roots against a greenish dark, and His crossed feet rest on a small block of wood. Our Lady stands wrapped at the left, the Magdalene kneels, Saint John lifts his joined hands. The National Gallery of Art reads the murky sky as Saint Luke's darkness over all the earth, and notes that Matthias Grünewald himself witnessed a full eclipse in 1502. The Gallery calls the work a masterful example of his deep spiritual faith translated into pictorial form; of twenty surviving paintings by him, it is the only one in the United States. One star is out.
Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother and his mother's sister, Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalen.
