The sky is the argument. Grünewald darkens it to the colour Luke reports over all the earth at the ninth hour — and he had watched a full eclipse in 1502, so he knew what that light does to flesh. Christ's emaciated frame sags against greenish blue, picked out by no named source. John, the Virgin and the kneeling Magdalene answer in gesture rather than speech. The National Gallery of Art calls the panel his faith translated into pictorial form. Twenty Grünewalds survive; this is the only one in America.
