Bones lie at the foot of the Cross, a skull and a few plants beside them. The dead lie under the One who is dying for them. Dalila Rodrigues, writing for the Grão Vasco museum, reads them as the sign of Calvary as the burial place of Adam and Eve; below, in the predella, Christ descends into Limbo, and Adam and Eve are there. Above, Our Lady swoons among the holy women, with the Magdalene and Saint John. Vasco Fernandes and Gaspar Vaz raise a wall of faces, spears and horses behind them. The bad thief twists. Jerusalem stands far off; on the right, Judas hangs.
