There is no manger. The Child lies naked on the forest floor, his mother kneeling to him, an image the Gemäldegalerie traces to fourteenth-century visions, the Franciscan John de Caulibus's and St Birgitta's, in which Mary adored her newborn on the bare ground. Above, the Father leans out of cloud, the dove beneath him.
The museum pairs that vision with penance, and gives penance to the boy Baptist beside the Child. Find the axe in the tree trunk at lower left, Lippi's name on its handle: the axe the grown preacher will warn of, already laid at the birth.
