About this painting

Lawrence sits with his feet on the grill that killed him, and holds his palm as lightly as a quill. The Met names his companions Cosmas and Damian, the physician saints the Medici kept close, and the three small men in red as Alessandro Alessandri and two sons, who paid for this altarpiece for their church at Vincigliata above Florence. Vasari saw it there. The pseudo-Arabic on the robes was never meant to be read; it says only that the world is wide. The panel is arched, and is printed arched.
