Two deaths on one board, a hand's breadth high. On the left Peter is nailed head-down, because, Berlin says, he asked to die that way rather than as his Lord had; the soldiers bend to the work like men fixing a gate. On the right John kneels at a wall and the sword is already up, while Salome waits behind. Masaccio painted this in 1426 under his great Pisa altarpiece, now scattered; Berlin holds three of its predella scenes. The museum's text, oddly, calls the beheaded man Paul; its title says John.
And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.
