A dappled white horse rears into a torn sky, and beneath it Saul sprawls on the ground, one hand thrown up toward a burst of light in the corner of the heavens. Acts has him fall in a light from heaven and names no horse. Parmigianino gives him one, and the Kunsthistorisches Museum says why it matters: the painter reads the miracle of divine illumination as a highly dramatic event, an ecstasy that seizes man and animal alike. So the light strikes twice, once in the man thrown to the earth and once in the beast rearing over him. A sword lies in the grass by his leg. The museum dates the canvas about 1527 or 1528. Far off, blue mountains stand along the road to Damascus.
