Christ lies full length on a white sheet in the grass, and a kneeling man in red holds up His head. Our Lady has sunk back into the arms of those behind her. At their feet lie a hammer, pincers, nails and a small jar, set down and finished with. The board is a hundred centimetres tall and a hundred and ninety-two wide, and Petrus Christus uses the width the way a tomb slab does: the body stretched along a green country, with towns on the far hills. Brussels bought it from a dealer named Lucq in 1844 and publishes nothing else, no essay, one line of acquisition. What the museum does not tell, the shape of the thing says. The body does not rise yet.
