Someone once tried to scratch heaven off this panel. The angels would not come off, so the sky was painted flat blue.
The Canigiani, Florentine bankers, commissioned it for a home altar. Joseph stands over the mothers on his staff, marvelling, Vasari wrote, that so old a woman as Elizabeth should have a child; his raised place is Joseph's rising cult after 1500. The Baptist beside Christ is Florence's patron, and in such a house a Florentine boy.
That was in the Elector Palatine's gallery in the 1750s. The angels came back in 1982, more than two centuries late.
