An epitaph is painted for a man already dead. Charles V ordered one of himself while he was still emperor: the imperial family kneeling barefoot in burial shrouds, the crown beside him and not on his head.
Only the Virgin walks toward the Trinity, the Prado notes, instead of gazing at it, dressed in the same blue as the Father and the Son. The emperor waits, and above him the paint thins until the bare ground shows through.
Titian finished it in October 1554. Charles did not abdicate until 1556.
