Christ looks back at us from under the beam, the crown of thorns pressed into His hair, a cord at His throat, one hand raised flat against the wood. Behind Him an old man with a white beard bends to the same cross: Simon of Cyrene, of whom Saint Luke writes, “they laid the cross on him to carry after Jesus” (Luke 23:26). The Museo del Prado, which owns Titian's other version, says this copy by Titian's own hand is housed in the State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, and that it was on the evidence of this canvas that Carlo Ridolfi, in 1646, named Simon as a portrait of the Venetian mosaicist Francesco Zuccato. A ledge runs across the foot of the canvas, with the number 1048 painted at its corner. Of the twin in Madrid the Prado singles out “Christ's tearful gaze, directed squarely at the viewer as a plea to join Him.” The same eyes are on us here.
