About this painting
There is a face under this one. Van Dyck had sketched a self-portrait on the canvas, and painted Saint Rosalie over it. He was in Palermo in 1624 when plague broke out and the city was sealed, and in that same year the long-lost bones of its twelfth-century patroness were found on Monte Pellegrino. Demand for her image was immediate. So the painter's own face lies beneath the saint pleading for the city he could not leave.
