A white sheet is fixed to the top of the Cross, lifting at its edge, and a pale disc hangs in the clouded sky beside it. Christ raises His face toward heaven with His mouth open; the cloth at His hips has slipped loose on one side. Everything else is weather. The painting by Anthony van Dyck hung in the Augustinian church in Antwerp until 1794, when the French carried it off to Paris with the rest of the city's altarpieces. The KMSKA records that it was recovered from France in 1815 and then assigned to the museum rather than returned to the friars. The museum publishes no date and no commentary, only that road. He went out as spoil and came home to anyone who walks in.
