About this painting
This panel hung in the Augustinian church in Antwerp until the French came. It was carried off to Paris in 1794 with the rest of the city's altarpieces, recovered from France in 1815, and then assigned to the museum rather than returned to the friars. The museum publishes nothing else about it — no date, no commentary, only that route. A crucifix taken as spoil, brought home, and handed to the public instead of back to the church that ordered it.
Jesus therefore, when he had taken the vinegar, said: It is consummated. And bowing his head, he gave up the ghost.
