The murder weapon is her name. The palm and the sword through the breast are Justina's attributes, so the executioner completes the identification rather than interrupts it.
She had refused to worship Mars, god of war. Her other attribute is a crown, which the Milwaukee Art Museum reads as earthly royalty traded for a saint's. Executioner and onlookers wear contemporary dress; Italy's state catalogue records columns, and hills, trees, a bridge.
Cardinal Leopoldo de' Medici bought it in 1675. The Uffizi records it in the Tribuna until 1769, ninety-four years in the room built to keep Francesco I's jewels.
