The subject is recognition, and nobody in the picture can be recognised.
Luke's travellers know Christ only when he breaks the bread, and he vanishes at once. Veronese, or his workshop, has put a whole family into that scene. The French national record catalogues them only as a man, a woman, a child, a servant, a spaniel. No name, no patron, no commission survives.
The owners are all on the record: the Duke of Savoy in Turin by 1635, then Marshal Créquy, then Louis XIII. The inventory taken at Créquy's death in 1638 listed it with no painter's name.
