Christ's blood runs down the wood to where a kneeling figure in red, fair hair loose, holds it and looks up. At the left Our Lady, in a blue cloak, looks down; at the right a figure in a rose cloak looks up. Three keep one Cross, and their eyes divide. The Cleveland Museum of Art reads the work as probably part of a small altarpiece for private prayer, by Andrea da Firenze, active in Florence and Siena after the Black Death, when such work was charged with emotion. The bottom has been trimmed, cutting off the scene. What remains keeps the kneeling one nearest the wood, lowest, still looking up.
