Christ hangs against a checkerboard of gold, and the ransom of the whole world is paid on a leaf smaller than a hand. Our Lady, haloed, in gold, sinks at the left, held from behind. The Cleveland Museum of Art gives this leaf to the Master of Guillebert de Mets and his workshop, named for the scribe of a Decameron made for Philip the Good of Burgundy, and singles out his mosaic backgrounds of delicately worked checkered patterns, naming this Crucifixion as one. The museum lists his other marks: prominent heads, small mouths, slender torsos, thin spindly legs, long finely worked fingers. Look at the fingers opened on the wood.
