About this painting

The desert here is crowded. Budapest's catalogue counts the traffic of the hermits' life: monks carried in litters and hand-carts, one cart drawn by a pair of lions; food lowered in baskets to anchorites in their caves; a recluse fed by an angel; a holy man blessing the monks who kneel before him. In the foreground the brothers bury one of their own, perhaps Ephraim the Syrian. The churches stand among the rocks like architects' models. This is the Budapest panel, a different picture from the Thebaid in the Uffizi.
