Round her halo runs the angel's greeting, Ave Maria gratia plena, and it breaks off at Do. The words were spoken at the Annunciation; the Christ Child they announced already lies across her lap, arms lifted, looking up. Our Lady crosses her hands on her breast. Two angels hold up a cloth of red, gold and black that falls behind and under her. The National Gallery of Art explains the type elsewhere: a Madonna of Humility sits on the ground rather than a throne, perhaps humus for humilitas, a convention introduced in the 1340s, apparently by Simone Martini. Fra Angelico painted her about 1430; the title says where she sits.
