His mouth is open because he is still speaking. MNAC describes Christ before death, lips parted, gaze pleading toward heaven; Odile Delenda hears in that gaze the last words Luke gives him, addressed to the Father.
Four nails hold him, as Francisco Pacheco prescribed, and Delenda notes the rule forces the legs to hang parallel, which suited the dignity of God made man.
Behind him Zurbarán lays near-total darkness, the three hours the Gospels record. Delenda names what it does to the body in front: the hard light turns the pale flesh into something close to carved relief.
