One hand is raised, and the nail wound shows in the palm; the side is marked too, a small red cut under the ribs. Christ rises out of gold, a white cloth over one knee, the red-cross banner on its staff. Bergognone painted Him about 1490, in the years the National Gallery of Art's biography has him called to the charterhouse of Pavia, 1488 to 1494. London's National Gallery observes that no evangelist describes Christ standing upon His tomb; the Gospels report a stone rolled away, a tomb empty. Bergognone painted the morning no one saw, and the hand is still raised over whoever stands before it.
