Two inscriptions answer each other: beside Pilate, Ecce homo; above the crowd, Crucifige eum. A third rises from the lower corners, where the Städel Museum says the donor family who commissioned the panel was damaged and overpainted early, their remnants uncovered only a few years ago.
Their sizes, the museum notes, reflect status. The children are far smaller than the father and a tonsured son, a monk, and it is the monk who virtually utters the family's prayer: Redeem us, Christ, Saviour. The crowd calls for his death; the family calls on him to save them.
