About this painting

One of the tormentors has Christ by the hair. The Minneapolis Institute of Art notes that the Passion tracts spun many tales around hair-pulling, a detail Dürer could not resist.

Mia reads the sheet as a display of jeering, scowling derision, the mob likened to animals: one of the men on the ground is posed like the mangy dog.

The woodcut belongs to the Large Passion, which the Art Institute of Chicago says was published in 1511 to illustrate a text by the monk Benedictus Chelidonius. At the center, Christ stands bound to the column.
