
Bermejo brought the north's oil into Aragon and used it for a realism that refuses to idealise anything, including the dead. This is one of four compartments of a predella on Christ the Redeemer, matched by the museum to a documented altarpiece for Santo Domingo de Silos at Daroca. Cèsar Favà and Mireia Mestre argue the four hung two by two, flanking a tabernacle, about 1474 to 1479. They were still together in a Paris collection in 1898; a sale in 1914 split them between two Barcelona buyers.
