Gabriel kneels with his scroll, and the Virgin turns from her book — modest, inward, already answering. Above the vaulted room the Father leans from a balcony and sends the dove down toward her halo. The Limbourgs painted this page to open the Hours of the Virgin, and gave it the richest border in the book — prophets and musical angels in the scrolling vines, with the duke's bears and swans below. The Metropolitan Museum, which holds the manuscript entire, calls the border unlike any other in it.
