The Met calls the scene unprecedented: a young woman studying alone in a great ecclesiastical space, seen through a double arcade. Catherine's figure is balanced against a bookstand nearly her own size — the Limbourgs' way of equating her with learning itself. Images of Moses crown both the altar and the stand. The page opens the longest saint's cycle in the manuscript, and its border, the richest of the set, marks it as the story's frontispiece. A patron for everyone who has ever loved a library.
