This is the first of four full-page pictures that, the Met explains, stand before the Mass for the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, three of them added beyond the book's original plan. John holds the Lamb of God at the edge of a wooded landscape full of wild creatures; the two men beside him remain unidentified.
Beneath the picture the text runs in a single column of alternating red and blue ink, the picture-book format the Met identifies here and on the two pages that follow. The duke meets the Baptist's feast with the Lamb already in John's hands.
