The Golden Legend says Anthony, searching the desert for Paul's hermitage, asked the way of a centaur and of a satyr. The Limbourgs would not choose between them. The Met's commentary describes the guide they painted as one creature built from both: a centaur's body with a goat's hair and hooves.
The beast had appeared before, in the Très Belles Heures de Notre-Dame, another Limbourg book for the duc de Berry, and the Met reads its return as the painters' and the duke's shared delight in strange stories. Anthony takes his directions from the strangest creature on the page.
