Fires on the horizon, a broken white head lying in black water, bones on the plain. Into this, the Met says, Christ comes to break the gates of hell and rescue the souls of the just, and it names who is waiting. Adam and Eve kneel in supplication on top of a ruined tower. Behind them figures from the Hebrew Bible climb out of the depths: Abraham and Isaac with the ram, and Noah carrying a model of his ark. A follower of Hieronymus Bosch painted it. The Harrowing appears in no gospel. It is in the Creed, and the first parents wait at the top of the wreckage.
