
Noah is carrying his ark. He climbs a winding stair out of the depths behind Abraham and Isaac with the sacrificial ram, while Adam and Eve kneel on top of a ruined tower with their hands out in supplication. That is the doctrine in one detail — the first parents at the top of the wreckage, waiting to be collected. A burning city to the right, a plain littered with bones to the left. The Harrowing appears in no gospel. It is in the Creed.
