In Giovanni di Paolo's heaven nobody kneels. Two friars, one in white, one in black, embrace; a gold-winged angel holds a crowned woman in red; rabbits are in the grass. The Metropolitan Museum calls the meadow tapestry-like, with giant flowers and fruit trees, and notes that what appear to be apple trees have lost their color to the gold beneath. With the Creation and Expulsion, it formed part of the predella of an altarpiece for San Domenico, Siena. He had seen Fra Angelico in Florence; the Met says he chose graceful rhythm over Florentine perspective to intensify the vision. Where the apples were, gold shows through.
