Lazarus stands in the mouth of the tomb, wound like a spool, and two men are unwinding him. Christ, one arm raised, a gold book in the other hand, has already spoken. The National Gallery of Art's own description counts ten haloed men behind Him, and beyond them hills, palm trees and a city of white buildings with red roofs running to the horizon. The Gallery attributes the canvas to Benozzo Gozzoli alone; its bibliography lists writers since 1980 who give it to Benozzo and his son Alesso. The linen comes off one turn at a time.
When he had said these things, he cried with a loud voice: Lazarus, come forth.
