Every hand in the room is busy except His. A soldier at the back raises his fist with the stick still in it; another drives a staff down on the crown; an old man kneels close and jeers into His face. Christ sits in red, head bowed under the thorns, feet bare. Karsten Ohrt's text for the Statens Museum for Kunst reads Hendrick ter Brugghen's scene as a story told in hands: a triangle whose peak is that rearmost fist, a line of gripping, striking hands running down the middle. Christ's two do not act. One has fallen between His knees; the other rests bound and slack on His right knee. Eva de la Fuente Pedersen traced the leering faces to late Gothic altarpieces and passion series on paper such as Dürer's. The fluted column behind them, Ohrt adds, stands for strength. Here it is Christ's.
And platting a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand. And bowing the knee before him, they mocked him, saying: Hail, King of the Jews.
