The museum's own catalogue reads this picture as a story told in hands. A triangle falls from the rearmost soldier's fist, still holding the stick he has struck with, down through every gesturing and mocking hand in the composition, and lands on Christ's two: one dropped between his knees, the other slack and bound on his right knee. Behind them a fluted column stands for strength. The leering faces, the earlier label adds, descend from Dürer's passion prints.
And platting a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand. And bowing the knee before him, they mocked him, saying: Hail, King of the Jews.
