Nancy's museum counts this among Caravaggio's very last works, and one of the very few by him kept in France. Henri II, Duke of Lorraine, ordered it in connection with his marriage to Margherita Gonzaga, and it stood on the altar of the Saint-Georges chapel in his palace.
For centuries it passed under other names, Reni, Guercino, even Bellange, until François Pariset returned it to Caravaggio in 1948.
The museum's record lists what the picture holds: the Virgin, the angel, clouds, lilies and a chamber. Heaven has come indoors: a cloud inside a room.
