Our Lady folds her hands and bows her head; nothing is given her to hold. The dark gives way to a faint light around her, and the National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo, notes that her blue robe is made of deep lapis lazuli. The museum dates it around 1655, when Carlo Dolci was 39, and traces the folded hands to the Madonnas of Titian. On the back of the canvas the prayer is written out: REGINA MARTIRUM ORA PRO NOBIS, Queen of Martyrs, pray for us. No cross is in the frame, only her hands. The words on the back are yours to say.
