About this painting
She was offered two crowns and picked the painful one. Dulwich tells the story on the label: at twenty-eight Catherine had a vision in which Christ asked her to choose between a crown of gold, meaning riches in this life, and a crown of thorns, meaning glory in the next. Dolci paints her wearing the thorns, eyes down, with a single glass-like tear on her cheek. The panel is cedar, and smaller than a sheet of paper.
