Two crowns were held out to Catherine, and she took the one that cuts. Carlo Dolci sets it on her black veil, the thorns standing up like a small hedge, and lets one glass-like tear rest on her cheek. Dulwich Picture Gallery tells the vision: at twenty-eight she saw Christ ask her to choose between a golden crown, ensuring riches in her earthly life, and a crown of thorns, guaranteeing glory in heaven. She wears the habit of a Dominican tertiary, her gaze cast down. Strong light from the right, Dulwich notes, gives her pale skin the look of alabaster. The tear does not fall.
