The gold in this picture is in the wrong place. The kings' gifts only look like gold — they are paint. The haloes, and the light coming off the Christ Child, are real shell gold, and they alone glow in the dark of the stable. Dolci inscribed the back of the canvas in his own hand, recording the commission in 1649, when he was thirty-three. He is in the picture too: the man in the red hat, peering round the door at the far right.
