The two disciples at the table have not yet recognized him. One watches the hands over the loaf; the other is busy pouring the wine. Heidi Hornik and Mikeal Parsons read it as the moment before the revelation, which the Uffizi finds already in the beam of light falling on Christ's face.
Behind him the Carthusians of the Galluzzo charterhouse step out of the dark as witnesses, the old prior Leonardo Buonafede at his right. The monks commissioned it for their guest quarters. Christ looks out of the picture at whoever sits down to eat beneath it next.
