Brera sets this picture beside the London one and says what changed: greater intimacy, a plainer palette, a dramatic, almost theatrical light that underscores the sacred nature of the moment. In the gallery's own room description the figures well up out of a dark ground, lit by a warm light from an unseen source; on the table a loaf, a broken loaf, an empty pewter dish, a glass of red wine, and Christ's right hand raised to bless the bread.
Painted at Paliano, Brera says, where Caravaggio hid after killing Ranuccio Tomassoni; bought in 1939 by the Amici di Brera.
