Ercole paints penance as anatomy. The Getty reads Jerome's wiry limbs, sunken eye sockets and tanned skin as the testimony of four years in the desert southeast of Antioch. He looks at the crucifix in his left hand; his right clasps the rock he beat against his breast until the temptations passed.
In a nook behind him sit his cardinal's hat and a book, for the Bible he would translate into Latin. The Getty links the gold-flecked detail to a refined patron, perhaps at the Este court of Ferrara. Inside the shelter, a lion recalls the thorn in its paw.
